Kiwi jockeys will have to pass a physical exam every two years in order to keep their riding licence.
The racing industry's oversight body has announced the move in an effort to prevent jockeys from damaging their health by trying to lose weight.
Jockeys must adhere to strict weight limits, which range between 50kg and 55kg.
But there's international concern that jockeys are going to extreme lengths to keep their weight down, including fasting, dehydration and self-induced vomiting.
A study in 2002 found one in five Kiwi jockeys had experienced an eating disorder, and 67 per cent were using various techniques to lose weight. The study found that the weight limits on jockeys threatened their health.
NZ Racing's new monitoring system will help to detect dangerous eating habits and health risks for underweight riders.
"Previously, a jockey was declared fit once, and they were fit for life," said Dr Phil White of NZ Racing.
