A 15-year-old overseas student has left New Zealand after an attack in which the principal of Hamilton's Fraser High School suffered a minor knife wound.
No criminal charges were laid, and the student was sent home to Macau immediately following the incident last Monday.
The principal, Martin Elliott, was trying to disarm a student who was threatening deputy principal Joan McCathie with a knife and spanner.
The student, who speaks little English, had been meeting with Ms McCathie to discuss difficulties he was experiencing in adapting to life at the school.
When he threatened Ms McCathie, she screamed, and Mr Elliott and two other deputy principals went to her aid.
They managed to restrain the boy, but Mr Elliott was slashed on his forearm during the struggle. His injuries were not serious.
