Police are investigating the bashing of a young man in downtown Auckland.
The man was taken to Auckland Hospital with serious head injuries after being discovered unconscious by a member of the public about 4.30 this morning.
He is in critical condition and medical experts say they fear for his life.
Police say the man was beaten with a blunt instrument some time during the early hours of the morning.
He was found lying near steps on the corner of Quay Street and Gore Street.
Police say the man is believed to be in his twenties, is about 182 cm tall with olive skin and short, black hair.
He was wearing blue/black Lorenzo-Umo pinstripe trousers, white shirt, a silver Beverly Hills Polo belt and Noble Bay maroon leather shoes.
"He was also wearing a distinctive silver ring with what appears to be a pyramid on it, on his middle left finger," said Detective Senior Sergeant Jim Gallagher.
Auckland's Quay Street has been cordoned off since early this morning, and Detective Senior Sergeant Gallagher says the area will remain cordoned off while police go over all evidence left at the scene.
Police want anyone with information to contact the Auckland Police or call 0800 VIOLENCE.
"Obviously we'd like to hear from anyone who saw anything disturbing in the Quay St, Gore St or general Downtown in the early hours of this morning," said Detective Senior Sergeant Gallagher.
