Parliament workers were sent into the street early today after fire alarms forced an evacuation just after 8am.
Parliamentary Service spokesman David Stevenson said it was thought that the alarms were activated because a piece of equipment in a basement control room had overheated.
But officials were still working to confirm that, he said.
Workers were allowed back into Parliament about 8.30am.
