CAMBRIDGE - Ann Huston and partner Mark Brockelsby have already received their perfect little New Year's Eve gift, but will find out today if son Oscar brought any other prizes with his arrival.
The pair were part of a radio station promotion involving 100 couples who tried to conceive the first baby of the new millennium. By late December only Ms Huston and Louise Kelleway of Auckland had yet to give birth.
Oscar Liam Huston entered the world at 10.07 pm on New Year's Eve, but Mrs Kelleway is not expecting her baby until Friday.
So here is the dilemma - is the "winner" the baby born closest to the new millennium, or the first baby in the new millennium?
91ZM station manager Grant Hislop said the couple who had the first baby after New Year's Eve were supposed to win a video camera, but the station had not foreseen anyone "coming that close on the other side."
Mr Hislop will decide what to do about the video camera today.
But neither couple are particularly worried who wins the main prize.
"It was never organised to be a competition. It was more of a quest," said Mrs Kelleway.
"We didn't really get into it to win anything. We were trying to have another baby anyway. Malcolm [her husband] heard about it on the radio and said we might as well get a free night in a hotel."
Ms Huston and Mr Brockelsby are just glad their son is healthy.
"Every baby you have feels special," said Ms Huston, who did not bother to make New Year's Eve plans because she knew Oscar would arrive that night.
