Just reading yesterday's story about the change in driver licence testing was enough to make me suddenly very conscious of the way I was driving.
Since I got my driver's licence two decades ago the standard for being allowed to get behind the wheel has got considerably tougher.
A few years ago the learner licence test was toughened up, and for the purposes of a newspaper story I went along and had another go, to see if I'd pass.
I didn't. In my defence, I stumbled on a question about towing trailers, which I've never done, but still, I'd like to think I still had a good idea of the rules.
And now the New Zealand Transport Agency has made the practical test tougher too, and suggested novice drivers get 120 hours behind the wheel under supervision before moving on to driving alone.
