A Thai immigrant plans to go home because it is safer than living in New Zealand, the High Court at Auckland heard yesterday.
Amnuay Waisongnern and her nephew, Charnborprat Chaichumphon, were victims of a home invasion by a group of young men at the nephew's Mt Roskill unit in August last year. Open garden shears were waved at Mr Chaichumphon's throat and he was hit over the head with a heavy rice cooker.
Vincent Wayne Alfred, 23, who wielded the shears, was sentenced to seven years' jail and David Ifa Pulu, 18, to six years'. A jury had found them guilty of aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery and injuring with intent to injure.
Prosecutor Natalie Walker told the court that Mrs Waisongnern now felt unsafe in this country and planned to return to Thailand.
