HAMILTON - Hamilton list MP Dianne Yates wants a national register to give children conceived from donated eggs and sperm information about their genetic parents.
She said the children should be able to get an amended birth certificate showing the donors' details.
Donors should also be able to get copies of the child's birth certificate.
Ms Yates said recent advances in assisted reproductive technology meant the law had to be updated to protect the rights of children and donors.
"I'm not against technology and I'm not against helping people having a child, but I think technology has gone far ahead of the legal and ethical considerations," she said.
Ms Yates was commenting on reports that a childless Auckland couple have advertised in Waikato for an egg donor.
She has devised a Human Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill which is before a health select committee in Parliament. It bans cloning, commercial surrogacy and the sale of sperm, ova and embryos.
It also establishes a body to oversee fertility clinics and requires centralised records to be kept so children can have access to their genealogical details.
