Space will be made available at other schools for Makoura College students facing a likely closure, says the Ministry of Education regional manager.
The Makoura College board of trustees on Friday announced they would be closing the school at the end of the year after Wairarapa College dismissed any chance of merging with the college.
After public consultation the board will hold a meeting on August 6 to make their final decision that has to be approved by the Minister of Education.
Central south regional manager Murray Williams says the ministry will work to ensure no student is disadvantaged in their education for 2009 if the college closes.
"The parents of existing Makoura College students and of year 8 students in the Makoura College catchment would be consulted to determine the preferred 2009 school of enrolment."
He said the likely scenarios are for parents to send their children to Wairarapa College, Kuranui College or they "may seek enrolment at one of the state-integrated or private schools in Wairarapa".
"The ministry would review the transport entitlement for students affected by any closure at Makoura."
Students who live 4.8km or more from the nearest state secondary school will get some form of transport assistance, Mr Williams said.
"Should Makoura close, consultation with a number of alternative schools will need to occur concerning property and staffing matters.
"However the ministry will ensure classroom space is available for all 2009 students who would have attended Makoura College wherever they enrol."
He said property arrangements that still need to be considered include "what happens to the Teen Parent Unit and associated early childhood centre and the technology provision for year 7 and 8 students."
