A trip to gather magic mushrooms may have reaped a deadly harvest for a Nelson Bays man.
Motueka coroner Jim Fry has ruled that Keith Robert Jones, aged 32, of Mariri, near Motueka, died by misadventure.
He said an autopsy showed that Mr Jones - who died in June - may have died of a cardiac arythmia, an epileptic fit, or an ingested substance such as the magic mushrooms.
Mushrooms could be nondescript in appearance, Mr Fry said.
Although Mr Jones knew what magic mushrooms looked like, he might have picked the wrong kind.
"He should have been pretty aware of what they looked like, but somewhere in there may have been one with a lethal substance.
"He entered into the magic mushrooms situation, and somewhere along the line something went wrong."
