KEY POINTS:
A man has been charged with attempted murder after a fight broke out following a collision between two cars.
Detective Sergeant Eddie Lyttle said a white Nissan Cifero was struck from behind by a purple 1981 Ford Falcon Saloon between 11am and 1pm on Saturday.
The incident happened on Chadwick Road in Greerton, Tauranga.
The two cars then parked across the road from Greerton School, he said.
Three men from the cars began to argue which escalated to two of the men fighting in an alleyway, he said.
It was during the fight that the driver of the Cifero, a 24-year-old Tauranga man, was stabbed in the chest with a knife.
The man was in Tauranga Hospital in a stable condition today.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward, describing the man charged with attempted murder as Polynesian, wearing a black vest, with a red top underneath.
The victim was wearing light-coloured clothing.
Mr Lyttle said the 30-year-old was arrested at a suburban Merivale address, after the Tauranga Armed Offenders Squad were called out.
A 30-year-old man was due to appear in Tauranga District Court this morning.
