Unfortunately for the Auckland City fans who packed the Kiwitea St clubrooms yesterday, the lack of liquor licence precluded any alcohol being sold over the bar.
The supporters hardly needed the booze to drown their sorrows, after Auckland bowed out of the semifinals of the Club World Cup with a 2-1 defeat to South American champions San Lorenzo in Morocco.
Even if it was short of midday, they deserved a drink or two to toast their team's success.
More than 50 die-hard fans, many of them friends and family, crammed into the clubrooms to cheer on the part-timers during their date on the world stage, a group of players they watch week-in, week-out in rather less glamorous surrounds.
