Today's honours list is not, in the words of Downing Street, "the glitziest list in recent years".
Now there's a concept to conjure with.
All those years of grey-suited bankers, portly party donors and obscure quango chairmen, the Queen's gardeners and the village postwomen so beloved of John Major, and we didn't realise those were the "glitzy" ones.
Well we never.
And what do we have here? The "unglitzy" figures of the chef, Rick Stein, and the film director, Ridley Scott, the "unknown" voice of Henry Blofeld, the completely "unegregious" figure of Rupert Murdoch's once-favoured editor, Peter Stothard, the "never-in-the limelight" presence of Brian McMaster, of the Edinburgh Festival, and the "anonymous" face of Alan Bates.
An insult, say we. Don't take it lying down, we add. Get out your pearls and your tiaras for the Palace and show 'em all.
