Could you please tell me what has happened to the plaque that was put up on a stone wall at Torpedo Bay? It was placed there on February 28, 2002, to mark the 175th anniversary of Dumont D'Urville's landing, and was organised by Devonport Heritage, with help from the Devonport Community Board. Recently, it seems to have disappeared. Patricia Chapman, Devonport.
It has indeed disappeared. It seems that the plaque commemorating the Astrolabe, D'Urville's ship, was removed when the seawall was rebuilt. It may have been stolen, says Margot McRae of Devonport Heritage, because there's no trace of it now.
My husband and I walk through the Takapuna shopping area (Hurstmere and Lake Rds) most Saturday mornings. We have noticed lots of small chrome discs, about 20-25cm diameter, plugged into the brick pavement. They are at irregular intervals, and at no set distance from the kerb or shopfront. Could you please find out what these are for? Jan Brown, Takapuna.
These are not, as has been suggested by a colleague, landing indicators for alien spacecraft. They in fact delineate footpath areas between business-rented council footpaths (typically by cafes and restaurants) and general council, or public, footpaths. The rented areas are commonly used for additional patron seating, promotional activities and sandwich boards.
Do you know if there are any plans to add traffic lights to the intersection of Vega Place with Constellation Drive? There are numerous businesses and a large daycare for 100 children in Vega Place, and at peak times exiting to turn right on to Constellation or turning right from Constellation into Vega can take up to five minutes. Louise Borton, North Shore.
Engineers at North Shore City Council say that the installation of lights at this intersection is not on their job sheet, and it's unlikely to be anytime soon. They suggest that if you are trying to get out of Vega Place, you turn left into Constellation Drive and then right into Parkway Drive and do the loop to get back in the direction you want to go. The flush median down Constellation Drive, if used properly, can help too with getting across such a busy road into Vega.
Bouquet: Dion Knill is delighted with the northwestern cycleway extension. He writes: Can you please pass on my gratitude to the contractors and especially Auckland City for the superb job they have done in extending the northwestern cycle route into Newton Rd? I am now using it four days out of five and my car is resting up at home instead of clogging the roads. Consider it done, Mr Knill.
