A failure to give way appears to have caused a crash in which a 36-year-old woman was killed at Meremere in Waikato on Sunday night.
Cynthia Christina Hilgers, of Tuakau, died when the van she was driving turned on to State Highway 1 to head north and was struck by a southbound Range Rover, Inspector Leo Tooman said.
The death was one of 15 on New Zealand roads in a horror four days stretching from Friday to Monday, and Mr Tooman said police were pleading for motorists to concentrate and drive to the conditions.
He said the Meremere crash - the first fatality on that stretch of SH1 since the road was realigned and had wire barriers installed - was frustrating.
"Just days ago our staff completed a joint intersection safety campaign in the Huntly sub-area and for this tragedy to happen is frustrating for those involved.
"With winter rapidly approaching we're asking motorists to drive with their headlights on, particularly during periods of low light, to increase their visibility," he said.
In coming weeks, police in the region would be driving with vehicle headlights on to enhance their profile, and officers wanted motorists to do the same.
Speed and careless driving have been identified as apparent contributors to several of the fatal crashes which occurred over the past few days.
