Expert overseas analysis of exhibits recovered during the Jack Nicholas murder inquiry has failed to shed light on who shot the Hawkes Bay farmer.
Several items sent by police to Britain for analysis were returned to New Zealand last month, inquiry head Detective Inspector Godfrey Watson said yesterday.
He would not say how many items were sent, or what they were.
"They haven't provided any answers to us at this time, however there is the prospect that if technology advances, we may be able to gain from it," Mr Watson said.
However, such technological developments could take two or three years, he said.
Three police continued to work fulltime on the Nicholas inquiry, making their way through an existing suspect list.
Work at the Nicholas' isolated farm at Puketitiri, where Mr Nicholas was killed last August, had been completed.
Police detective work has involved seeking information on firearms advertisements and stories on the rabbit calicivirus published in the local newspaper, Hawke's Bay Today.
