Q: Is road resurfacing scheduled for Karangahape Rd in the near future? Travelling east between West Terrace and Pitt St, two manhole covers stick up significantly and the surrounding seal is in such poor repair that motorists drive round them rather than bump over them. Robin Johansen, West Harbour.
A: Work on the manhole covers and repairing the seal around them was scheduled to start at the end of January. There are no plans at this stage to reseal the rest of K Rd.
Q: Why are bus drivers not obliged to wear seat belts? They are in a very vulnerable position just behind that big window. Jan de Haast, Howick.
A: Russell Turnbull of Stagecoach says, on behalf of the industry, that bus drivers are not required to wear seat belts because they need to be able to escape from any customers who get aggressive. Taxi drivers are exempt for the same reason.
Q: Why (at least at night) does the red arrow prohibiting people from turning right from Victoria St into Halsey St stay on for the duration of the green light for those going straight through? This means many people go straight through those lights and do a U-turn to turn on to Halsey St. Why can't the red arrow disappear? The amount of traffic heading towards the city in the evening does not seem to warrant the red arrow. Tracy Chubb, Auckland.
A: Auckland City Council lists this intersection as one of its crash blackspots. History shows that 67 per cent of crashes at intersections like this one happen at night or in offpeak hours. Since the right-turn arrow has been there, the number of accidents has reduced significantly. So the arrow stays.
