Q: What is the difference between a motorway and an expressway? K.M. Smith, Papakura.
A: A motorway does not allow pedestrians or cyclists, and you can only get on a motorway at on-ramps and interchanges. An expressway looks pretty much the same as a motorway, but pedestrians and cyclists can use it, and there is access for people whose properties lead on to it. For example, north of Mill Rd on the Bombay Hills is a motorway, and south of Mill Rd is an expressway.
Q: Traffic flow in Albert St in the city has been a nightmare at peak times since it was designated a main bus route. Turning and bus lanes, traffic light phasing and carpark access are all problematic. Are there going to be any further changes to improve the system? Ian Wright, Glendowie.
A: Typically, the council allows any new system three months to settle in before any changes are made. The bus lanes are an important part of new bus services from the North Shore, and will feed the Northern Busway when it opens. However, the transport people at the council are looking at the light phasing to see if it can be improved. Also, the further painting of the bus lanes may make them stand out a bit more. I also have to say that from my eyrie high above the street, the traffic seems to move along quite well in Albert St. Or maybe I'm just watching at the wrong time.
Q: Can you tell me about the new road being built over the railway line at the corner of Great South Rd and Myers Rd in Manurewa? Margie Whitehead, Manurewa.
A: This is another temporary road built to carry heavy loads to the Huntly for the power station upgrade. Some of the loads are over 200 tonnes. The present bridge was not designed for such a weight.
