Q. As part of the Greenlane roundabout upgrade, will anything be done about the grotty little walkway/cycleway that goes under the off- and on-ramps and over the motorway, just south of the roundabout? Tim Brown, Remuera.
A. Great improvements are planned, and necessary. How many people even knew the link was there?
The existing pedestrian underpass will be extended to allow for the new southbound slip lane, lighting will be improved, new handrails installed and the walls resurfaced. The entrances at both ends will be widened and made more obvious, to encourage people to use the walkway. Footpaths on the approaches to the underpass will allow for separate walkways and cycleways.
In its efforts to encourage cycling in the city, the council also plans to widen the footpath on the southern side of Greenlane West between Wheturangi and Great South Rds to separate cyclists and pedestrians. The cycleway already on Greenlane West will be extended to Wheturangi Rd.
Q. What is the purpose of the small white tags in the Onewa Rd earthworks? David Phillips, Auckland.
A. The white tags are hollow plastic tubes called wick drains, and they are there to drain water from the ground. The earth around the end of Onewa Rd needs to be compressed to enable construction, and draining off the water allows that. The wick drains go well down into the ground and act like the wick on a kerosene lamp, with pressure forcing the water out from down below. The water then runs off into the local waterway system.
