A number of deer being carried in a stock truck which tipped over on State highway 73 yesterday afternoon had to be put down after the crash, about 3.30pm.
Police said today the west-bound truck appeared to have lost control on a winding section of the road at Turiwhate. No other vehicles were involved.
The Kumara Volunteer Fire Brigade was first on the scene after members of the public stopped to assist. The truck driver received minor injuries and was later taken to hospital.
Sergeant Brent Cook, of Greymouth police, said a veterinarian, in conjunction with the owner of the truck, made the decision to put down some of stock.
Inquiries into the crash were continuing today. Mr Cook said police were grateful to members of the public who assisted at the roadside with the truck driver until the fire brigade and police arrived.
