Auckland City ratepayers are spending $8000 on secure garaging for Mayor John Banks' new $500,000 Bentley. Mr Banks has upgraded a garage car park for his 6.75-litre, turbo-charged V8 Bentley Arnage.
The garage, in an annexe behind the Town Hall, was home to the mayoral Daimler, which former mayor Christine Fletcher ditched in 1999.
The cost of replacing the old wooden door with an automatic roller door was $6000, and $2000 is being spent providing an emergency door to the garage.
Mr Banks said last night that the door needed to be replaced, and he had turned two mayoral parks outside the City Administration Building into public car parks returning $5000 a year to the council. He was driving his cars at no cost to ratepayers.
It is costing $8463 to move his office to the Town Hall, but Mr Banks said: "I will pay for that over the next three years because I am spending nothing on booze in my office." He said $2500 was spent on alcohol last year.
