A 12-year-old boy was flown to hospital for treatment for a fractured skull after a farm bike accident on Cape Kidnappers beach, Hawke's Bay, on Saturday morning.
The boy, from Napier, crashed his three-wheeler machine into a walker on the beach.
The boy's injuries included a fractured skull, broken teeth and cuts. The walker, a man in his mid-20s and a member of the boy's family, received a sprained ankle. The boy is now recovering at home.
Police are still investigating the accident, but in a statement they reminded people of their obligations when using farmbikes on the beach.
As the beach was a road, police could deal with offenders through warnings, instant infringement fines or arrests.
