KEY POINTS:
A man drove through three sets of red lights chased by police with a three-month-old baby lying unrestrained on the front seat.
The man also mounted the footpath during the 5km journey.
Police were alerted when a woman called police to her Fraser St home saying a man had threatened to harm her. Before police arrived at the address, the man had left with the baby in the car.
A police patrol car spotted his vehicle on Fraser St but he failed to stop for them.
Police had been told the man had taken the baby and believed the child was in the car they were following.
Senior Sergeant Wayne Mills said the police car only reached speeds of about 45km/h while following the vehicle.
"His speeds were low but the manner of his driving was dangerous," Mr Mills said.
The man eventually returned to the Fraser St address and gave himself up to police.
A 43-year-old Brookfield man was due to appear in Tauranga District Court today charged with failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, cruelty to a child and threatening to cause grievous bodily harm.
