More than 100 years after it was opened as a therapeutic spa, Rotorua's Museum of Art and History is finally being completed.
A $22 million project to expand the Tudor-style building follows original architectural plans from 1902 which were left incomplete when the project ran out of money.
The Rotorua District Council this week awarded the contract for the $9 million final stage of the Rotorua Museum Centennial Project to the local branch of Watts and Hughes Construction.
Stage 1 of the three-stage project - the development of a new viewing platform on top of the building - was completed in March 2006.
It is thought the original platform was closed and removed because of fears of more earthquakes after the devastating 1931 Napier earthquake.
