While some millennium revellers partied hard until dawn on Saturday, others preferred to celebrate the New Year in a quieter fashion.
At Hastings-based Gracelands rest-home most residents were tucked in bed by 10 pm.
"Some know what's happening, but I think that would be the last thing on their minds; they're at the end of their days and they're not too thrilled about the millennium to be honest," said nurse Colleen McCool on the night.
Residents at Nelson's Oakwoods Resthome retired early as well, apart from one 105-year-old who treated herself to a glass of sherry at midnight.
A spokeswoman said residents enjoyed a special 8 am breakfast banquet on Saturday accompanied by wind instrument entertainment.
In Dargaville, residents at Kauri Coast Hospital and Rest Home waited up to watch events from around the world on television as the clock ticked over to midnight.
A bit of a yawn in rest-homes
