The first year singles championship at the Far North RSA Bowling Club was keenly contested by identical twins Harry and Harding Wharerau on January 19.
At 16-years-of age and six feet, five inches in height, these two very popular young men cut imposing figures on the bowling green, noted event reporter Ian MacNee.
"When play commenced with a two life system brotherly love was put on the backburner as the serious business of establishing who was top dog took place."
Round one was an even battle with Harry playing steady draw bowls to take first blood 21-13, and Harding dominating round 2 by scoring on the first seven ends, eventually winning comfortably. The final, with a format of first to 21 points and no time limit, was a tense game with scores even at 10-all after eight ends before Harding gradually pulled away to triumph 21-14.
The FNRSABC reminded local bowlers it was taking entries for the Bells Produce women's 2x4x2 pairs on Wednesday, February 6; and also the Northland Age mixed triples on Tuesday, February 26.
