Cloud obscured the view of Wednesday's transit of Venus for many, but some in the Far North saw it, and photographed it for posterity.
They included Richard Bayly, who captured this photo at Awanui at around 3pm, using a 150mm refracting telescope and an 1.2-megapixel digital camera, the image showing numerous sunspots and Venus with an apparent diameter of about one-30th that of the sun.
Kaitaia man Bruce Buckby also succeeded in photographing the transit, again using a small telescope. Bruce said half his photos were taken through cloud but the phenomenon was visible for a very short period of time when the weather cleared. He also recorded about 10 minutes of digital video.
The next transit is due in 2117.
