Planning is well under way for next year's celebration of Kaitaia Intermediate School's half-century, although some former pupils probably believe they were there well before that.
Originally the then four-classroom school, complete with woodwork for boys and cooking for girls, was a satellite (split body) of Kaitaia Primary School. In 1968 it became a separate entity, with its own headmaster, staff and committee.
By then it had grown to 11 classrooms, plus administration and the usual support buildings. It's those 50 years of independence that will be celebrate with October's reunion.
The school is using its Facebook page to spread the word, and to invite contributions, not least in the form of volunteers to help organise the reunion (contact Sheree Blakeborough on (09) 408-1490 or kisadmin@xtra.co.nz).
A collection of class photos is building up on the Facebook page, but there are some major gaps. The call has gone out for named class photos from 1964-1967, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1975 (except rooms 6, 9 and 11), 1977-79 and all of the 1980s.
