Cooper's Beach

Players from Waiuku North featured for the 29 teams entered into the Men's Memorial Triples, one of the Cooper's Beach Bowling Club's major events of the season, and played over the weekend of May 10-11.

Apart from a short shower of rain on Saturday the weather was on the organisers' side, being very warm on Sunday. The tournament format was 4 games of 1 hour 20 minutes on Saturday with the top 16 teams progressing to the main event and the remaining teams in the consolation event on Sunday where 3 games of 1 hour 20 minutes were played.

Results were as follows. Highest qualifier Day 1: Shaun Richards, Donny Holmes, Dion Davis (Kaikohe) 4 wins, 8 points, 26 ends, 68 shots. Main event: Ken Fitness, Steve Bicknell, Jim Hart (Composite) 3, 6, 19 , 44, 1; David Hood, Hugh Fidler, Peter Wilson (Keri, Onerahi, Cooper's) 2, 4, 15, 32, 2; Barry Johnstone, Nick Blechynden, Nigel Leslie (Kaeo) 2, 4, 15, 29, 3.

Consolation event: Marty Doak, Russell Hockley, John Rapana (RSA/ Houhora) 3, 6, 19, 44, 1; Dennis Breckon, Trevor Smith, Bryon Corfield (Cooper's Beach) 3, 6, 18, 39, 2; George Lydiard, Ardi Marsh, Dean McMurchie (Kensington) 3, 6, 15, 35, 3. Good sports over the two days were Denis Hailey with Neil Marr and Clive Scahill.

On behalf of the club organisers thanked the event's generous sponsor, everyone who contributed to make the weekend a success, including the kitchen staff who supplied a hot meal on Saturday night, the members who made soup for lunches, those who supplied plates for afternoon tea on Sunday and all the women who give up their time on Mother's Day to help run this tournament. Many thanks also went to the greenkeeper, bar staff, umpires, match committee, raffle sellers, and most of all the players.
