Organisers were particularly pleased to report that over half of the field who took part in the 7th annual Wahine Tryathlon in Kaitaia on Saturday, November 2, were first-timers.
Event spokesperson Kahu Thompson noted 50 of the 90 participants on the day were taking part in their first Wahine Tryathlon. They had four courses to choose from - Kauri being the biggest challenge, a 900m swim, 45km bike and 12km run, with the smallest course being the Kowhai with a 300m swim, 9km bike and 3km walk.
Kahu said the Kowhai was the most suitable course for those who had never completed a triathlon, but many wahine who did finish it realised later that they could have kept going and so were looking forward to upping the distance next year. One who ended up being "absolutely pumped" with her effort on the day was local health promotion manager, Cathy Cherrington, among those participating for the first time.
"She hopped on a bike again after 40 years, had a tumble but kept on going, now she is flying around the streets like a 10-year-old again. Her goal for next year is to bike the infamous Pukepoto hill and not hikoi (walk) up with her bike and also to complete Iron Maori," said Kahu, adding that Cherrington had now issued a challenge to all her workplace managers yet to take part in the Wahine Tryathlon to give it a go!
"We hope that you will take up the challenge next year, if you have never participated in this type of sport before. Don't let your fears hold you back, this is totally do-able. Remember the aim is not to compete but to complete!" Kahu encouraged prospective entrants.
