District Court judge Murray Hunt offered his congratulations, and an assurance that, unlike their predecessors long ago, they would not be required to carry swords or ride horses, to two new Justices of the Peace last week.
Retired teacher Mercia Zena Huia Smith (Herekino), and her daughter-in-law, Danelle Margaret Pearl Smith, who teaches at Broadwood Area School, were supported by friends and family as they swore the oath of allegiance before Judge Hunt in the Kaitaia District Court on Wednesday.
Judge Hunt told them that the office they had joined was a very old one, dating back to 14th Century England, but was still valuable and very relevant.
The Ms Smiths were genuine, highly regarded members of their community, their careers in education and involvement in their community making them particularly good candidates.
"There is no more important role than educating and providing for children," he said.
"This is a proud day for you and your family," he added.
