Over the past four years since its establishment, the event formerly known as the Kaikohe Kids Sports Expo has grown from strength to strength, and that progression was expected to continue this year when the event is held on March 1 under the moniker, Whanau Fun Fest 2014.
Spokesperson Ryan Maraki noted the change of name indicated that the annual expo which traditionally takes place in the first weekend of March had evolved into a different beast in the four years since since it was established.
"The expo has grown in popularity every year," said Maraki noting that on the back of the success of last year's event which saw 500-plus participants turnout, the organisers continued to develop the concept by combining with the Child, Youth and Family sponsored Children's Day, and also Te Kohe Kohe Drop In Centre's Peepi Playground.
"Last year there were 10 different sporting activities for local kids to try last year, with local clubs as well as regional organisations represented, with the Northland Football Federation, Hockey Northland and Rugby League Northland being key providers. This year many of the favourite sports will return; football, league, hockey, softball, gymnastics, basketball and touch. Also on board this year we have CrossFit, cricket, atuatanga, netball and rugby with many others to confirm."
CYF will provide whanau with information and giveaways in conjunction with various other Northland health providers, while the playground people will provide activities and information for tots from 0 to 5 years of age and their whanau. As well, funding for entertainment will allow other activities to take place to ensure the event caters to as wide an audience as possible which means year punters can expect to enjoy bouncy castles, go karts, Thomas the Tank Engine rides, water slides, and live music along with the traditional large selection of sports to try.
