A CUT ABOVE: Kaitaia's Abigail Lane, moments after being named the 2013 Alto Young Butcher of the Year.

Kaitaia's Abigail Lane won the 2013 Alto Young Butcher of the Year title on Saturday, which also entitles her to represent New Zealand.

Abigail, who works at Pak'n Save Kaitaia when she isn't chasing trophies and titles, navigated a cutting test, exam and interview before being put through her paces in an on-stage game show challenge at the awards dinner in Auckland on Friday night.

As well as winning the title she was also named in the national butchery team, the Pure South Sharp Blacks for next year's Tri Nations butchery competition in the UK.

Her title prize included a study tour to Europe next year.

"Four years ago I started this journey, and I never dreamed it would give me the opportunity it has, and the career I am so passionate about," she said.
