That's it for the old Kaikohe pub

GOING ...

GONE

The last piece of the old Kaikohe Hotel that was still standing came down on Thursday afternoon.

The toppling of the chimney attracted quite a crowd, spectators lining the security fence to see it fall. It didn't give up easily though - it was reportedly designed never to come down - and it took about 30 minutes to dig around the footings before it finally gave up, coming down with a very loud thud and shaking the ground.

It also fell relatively intact, rather than shattering as most people were expecting.
