A 17-year-old Kaitaia man was still on the run from police yesterday after he and a co-offender allegedly robbed the Price Cutter shop on the town's main street on Sunday afternoon.

According to police two young men entered the shop at around 4.30pm. Both were wearing baseball caps and had bandannas pulled up over their noses to conceal the lower half of their faces.

One of the pair grabbed the male shop assistant by his jersey, held what police believe was a screwdriver to his throat and demanded money. The offender then opened the cash register with one hand and took about $100, both offenders then running off, across Commerce St and into Bank St.

As they ran they pulled their bandannas down, a witness telling police she recognised the main offender. The teenager is well known to police, and was already subject to arrest on other matters.

The same offenders are suspected of breaking into the Far North REAP building in Puckey Ave a little earlier in the afternoon, smashing the back door to gain entry and taking a laptop.

The packaging, which they discarded outside the building, was seized by police for forensic examination.
