The summertime sport of tennis is enjoying good numbers in Kaitaia with nearly two dozen turning out every week for a social game of doubles on the town club's tennis courts on Tuesday mornings.
Spokesperson Pops Tapatahi noted the hit-out took place from around 9am to 12 noon and with four courts, there was room for 16 players at any one time. Pops advised a casual format which was applied by one and all to the games worked, as whenever odd numbers showed up from one week to the next, everyone was guaranteed plenty of game time.
He said the sessions - held on a day formerly used exclusively by the club's fraternity of lady members before their numbers declined - offered fun, the chance to stay fit and active and socialise. It was also a case of the more the merrier, said Pops, encouraging other members of the community, particularly former players, to join in.
The group wraps up for the Christmas break today but plans to resume in January, on a date to be confirmed. New players were always welcome, with players required to make donation each week and also encouraged to join the club (for which the annual membership fee was $100).
On behalf of the club, Pops wished Age readers a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and hoped all would stay safe over the festive season.
