The signs advising that Kaitaia's main street footpaths are out of bounds for scooters, skateboards and bicycles worked well when they were painted just over a year ago, but have been losing their effectiveness recently, according to police.
A spokesman said the problem of wheels on the footpaths wasn't as bad as it was before the signs appeared, but a hard core of riders were persisting, and becoming bolder. Some were even riding their bikes right into shops.
Many of the main street business people and pedestrians had had enough, he said, and the police were going to their rescue.
From now on, anyone who rode their scooter, skateboard or bike on a footpath between Taaffe Street (Archibald's) and the southern end of the street (Birdie's Cafe) would have their 'transport' confiscated and handed over to the Far North District Council, and would not get it back until they paid $50.
"It might be a good idea if parents had a word with their kids, because no doubt it will be them who will be asked to come up with the $50," the spokesman said.
