A routine traffic stop at Umawera on Saturday evening led police to a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory at Whangape.

The 45-year-old driver of the vehicle was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and possession of equipment for the manufacture of the drug.

Detective Sergeant Mark Robertson said inside the four-wheel-drive vehicle and the trailer it was towing police found what amounted to all the components required for a methamphetamine laboratory.

The vehicle and trailer would be examined by National Clan Lab staff, and further charges were likely to be laid.

"We seized equipment, chemicals, basically an entire lab, breathing apparatus and protective clothing," Detective Sergeant Robertson said.

Two properties in the Whangape area were searched later the same day, police seizing more equipment and chemicals found in bush.

The arrested man was held in custody and is to appear before the Kaitaia District Court today.
