The big game fishing season is starting to show some reel action off the west coast of Ahipara with a few boats going out for a look while the weather has allowed them to enjoy some time on the water.
Keen fishos Lynda and Robbie Matthews were caught in slightly wet conditions on board their fishing boat Karizma recently but were not disappointed with their day as Lynda landed a 103.6kg striped marlin, the first to be the first weighed at Ahipara for the 2014/15 season, the West Coast Hokianga Club is still waiting for their piece of the action.
Lynda and Rob's son Leighton was the first to land a striped marlin for the club a few days previously. He caught his off Doubtless Bay and it was 115.4kg when weighed at Houhora.
Ahipara club members will be gearing up for their first club tournament when the February Trophy kicks off next month.
Five species are targeted and anglers have all month to weigh in marliln, tuna, hapuku, snapper and kingfish to have an accumulated weight of fish caught judged on a points system.
