KNOW YOUR DOPE: A new canabis crop is undoubtedly thriving in the Far North, and the police are keen to know where it's growing.

Police in the Far North are keen to hear from anyone who can point them in the direction of a cannabis crop, and are encouraging people, particularly in rural areas, to keep their eyes peeled for tell-tale signs of illegal horticultural activity.

"We want to know where cannabis is growing, and if possible who's growing it," Detective Simon Wihongi (Kaitaia) said.

"That doesn't mean we want people to become detectives, and we certainly don't want anyone to confront a possible offender, but we will make very good use of any information that anyone can give us."

That included sightings of suspicious vehicles and activity, or seeing strangers where they normally wouldn't be.

"Rural people tend to know who the locals are, and a strange vehicle will often stand out like a sore thumb," Detective Wihongi added.

"What we're keen to get hold of is information like the make, model and registration of suspicious vehicles, descriptions of suspicious people and/or activity. It would be helpful if we could get as much detail as possible so we can identify the offenders, including the precise location and time."

Anyone with anything to report was welcome to contact Detective Wihongi at the Kaitaia police station, phone (09) 408-6500, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555-111.
