ON THE COUNT OF THREE: Photograph by Francis Malley.

Soft sand at Waipapakauri Ramp provided free entertainment for some locals over the holiday period, as visitors, oblivious to the relevant laws of physics, lost traction as they attempted to drive on to or off 90 Mile Beach. The common response, apparently, was to put the pedal to the metal, until the car had buried itself to the sills. Some locals augmented their household income by offering a towing service, for a fee, while some pushed and others just watched on in amusement.
