Deb began her journey (no-one calls it a career) with tarot cards because she saw it as a safe 'modality', a tangible tool for the hands and because of the considerable amount of literature available on the subject.
"I dabbled professionally with angel readings at the end of last year and that showed me I could do it and gave me a lot of confidence and showed I wasn't too bad at it. I am still nervous, there is humility around it, but I am honoured to do it.
"I don't use the tarot much now, I just talk to people and my clairvoyancy is getting stronger, a lot more detailed and clearer and I have been working with a spiritual coach, honing the skills around archangels and loved ones."
Deb Nathan works one day a week from Kapiro Road, Kerikeri, and will give readings by appointment in person or by phone.

CARMEL GLENANE:
Most facilitators of what could collectively be termed metaphysics have learned from experience and belief. However Australian, Carmel Glenane, who is coming to the Far North for the first time in early December to conduct workshops, is academically highly qualified. The country girl from Ballarat holds a B.A. in Psychology and Social Sciences and has studied 'esoteric and psychological disciplines' since 1975.
What she does is arguably the most complex to understand unless you're into these things - and a great many are. Her tour, for instance, is called Bringing The Feminine Reiki to New Zealand and in 1991 she opened the Atlantis-Rising Healing Centre in Coolangatta on the Gold Coast that 'incorporates Reiki, massage, beauty therapies, classical acupuncture and fine designer jewellery'.
Her literature describes her as a 'renowned channeled writer, metaphysical teacher and sought-after healer who has deciphered the code of The Philosophy of the Divine Feminine, a self-nurturing philosophy based on the principal (sic) of Truth through the Mother's wisdom.' And although she started teaching secondary school she says she knew it wouldn't be a fulltime career.
"I had a complete sea change, leaving the intellectual world of Melbourne and established a healing centre because I had a burning desire to facilitate change in consciousness, not only for myself but for all who wanted to help change their mindset."
She suggests the 'huge global shift in consciousness' in 2000 meant 'energies were being directed to the feminine divinity.' She founded what she terms Senju-Kannon Reiki, the Ancient Feminine lineage and despite the female-centric references men are not exempt.
"I see men who wouldn't have dared come into my centre 10 years ago sitting having foot spas with Reiki and loving it. Ordinary people are embracing energies like they never have before."

ZARA WRIGHT:
At first glance Zara Wright could pass as a real estate agent and laughs when it's suggested because she used to be one. The only legacy now is the stylish jacket, killer heels and pink nail polish but she has the office. She works from a building on Kerikeri's main street between a café and a clothing store but any further similarity with a hard-nosed commercial world is dispelled by her surroundings.
Candles and white sofas emit an air of tranquility in these rooms. Her brochure is filled with a broad range of 'modalities' like Thetal Healing, Inner Cause Coach, Clearing Blessings, intuitive readings and Rainbow Essences of Aotearoa. She admits it's wide ranging but works from what she calls a 'much higher plane'.
"People want guidance to know what's going on within. Things that are blocking come out in the reading and that can lead to healing so the client gets the best out of it to become well or to clear a block they can't remove themselves. Clearing it gives a sense of freedom and peace."
Zara is another farm girl, born in Tokoroa and mainly raised in Papakura. From a young age she would nurse animals, bees, flowers, anything that needed mending and always knew there was something outside of herself, as she describes it.
"I started off trying to understand the visions and feelings, sensing a person or a glance but knowing they're not there and I could pick up on people's pain in their body and wondered if it was me."
She has never stopped and now, years filled with courses and learning later, she is one of the few operators in this field to have a dedicated office.
