Dave Collard demonstrating how to find a phone. Photo / John Stewart

Dave Collard eats, sleeps and breathes the 90 Mile Beach Snapper Bonanza at this time of year, but he hasn't gone quite as far as grooming the beach before the contestants arrive.

He was out there the other day with his garden rake for a very different reason, to conduct a fruitless search for the flash cell phone he lost while he was busy catching one solitary snapper one high tide earlier.

His mate and fellow Bonanza organiser John Stewart was there to offer encouragement and to record the search for posterity, but apart from that wasn't much use.

He did employ the technology available to him to track the phone down to within six metres - he didn't have a mobile device that would have pinpointed it more accurately - but that wasn't enough to guarantee a successful search.

Dave's bought a new phone.
