Just because there's no rugby on doesn't necessarily have to mean there's no rugby on! As the case proved at the Kaitaia rugby clubrooms on Saturday afternoon where a large number of stalwarts enjoyed a get together to relive the good old days over a fine spread and a few refreshments.
The gathering was initially due to have been held before the Kaitaia v Eastern club game, which was eventually called off. While the Eastern faction were unable to make it in the end, no doubt still with their hands full cleaning up after last week's storm, many of the Kaitaia veterans present admitted they could not recall the weather ever being so bad as to prevent a round in the domestic competition from being played.
Ironically, the gathering went ahead in fine warm conditions, although no one doubted the nearby fields were far too waterlogged to play on. Kaitaia stalwart - and Mangonui sub union chairman - Barry Murray welcomed everyone.
"A lot of us are still here, unfortunately some are not with us," said Murray before reminding of the club's proud history.
"The last 12 to 13 years, won the Bell four times often we came from behind too. We came runner-up a couple of times, all great times you never forget," he said, going on to mention a core group of influential stalwarts - including his brother Joe, Roger Sloane and Dave Webber - whose efforts in recent times had ensured Kaitaia remained a force in local rugby, with well maintained facilities.
