A 13-year-old girl told the Kaitaia District Court last week that the man who admitted abusing her had torn her family apart.
"I feel I have lost the support of those who should be there for me," she said.
"Some of my family have stopped communicating with me. I have lost my mother, emotionally and physically. I have been traumatised by what he has done to me and my family."
The girl, who was 12 when the offending began, told Judge Duncan Harvey that she had been fearful of suffering physical harm at the hands of the defendant, and now had "trust issues." She had been shamed by constantly being watched "in a sexual way" and experienced anger, a sense of betrayal and constant sadness.
She had been confused by the defendant's actions and disgusted by what he had asked her and said to her. She felt isolated and powerless, and had considered harming herself. She had lost her innocence, the prisoner having taken her childhood from her.
