Local racing mothers and grandparents stole the limelight in the Kaikohe Speedway's final meet of the summer last Sunday.
Cars numbers were reported as down a little, a traditional occurrence after the major Easter Stampede meeting, apparently, although a couple of visiting drivers from Wellsford were there to try out the track.
The day's feature events included the Mother's Day Classic for non-racing mothers won by Janet Hussey driving Rex and Didi Roycroft's car and holding out Fran Verney on the final lap to take the chequered flag; the Racing Mother's Trophy with Carmen Hallett emerging a surprised winner, winning two out of three against Didi Roycroft; and the Grandparents' Challenge which saw Dave Cortesi leading for most of the race until mechanical failure forced him to the infield, allowing Rex 'Old Fox' Roycroft, driving the newly acquired car of Steve and Ann Hood, to take the chequered flag from wife Didi in a hard-fought affair.
All other grades had an enjoyable day with a number of drivers going out for the first time and vowing to be back with a car next season. At the end of the day, the feature All-in was won by Phil Mainland driving his limited saloon from Warkworth.
The meet officially marked an end to Kaikohe's 2013/14 racing season, the club now moving into its annual winter track maintenance programme which begins this coming weekend with many loads of clay carted in by hard-working club stalwarts Max Andresen and Keith Wilson.
