The fledgling Far North Cavy Club will host a pet show at the St John hall in Bonnett Road, Kaitaia, on Saturday week (April 12), and most things fluffy and cuddly, along with some not so much, will be very welcome.

Organiser Rebekah Duncan said experienced pet breeders/owners and pet-minded friends would be on hand to help, while she had plenty of experience of her own to draw on.

"I own, breed, and would like to show guinea pigs, mini lop rabbits and Bengal cats, among other pets," she said, adding that she had been involved in most aspects of pet care and animal husbandry for many years.

The big goal was to establish a non-profit rabbit and cavy (guinea pig) club in Kaitaia and surrounds to help pet owners get together, meet like-minded people, and learn more about their companion animals. "There hasn't been a rabbit/cavy club in the Far North to cater for pet owners before, so it will be pretty cool to see what interest there is in increased local pet activities, and events we may run in the future," Rebekah said.

"Last October we ran a pet show, which attracted approximately 40 entries, and breeders from as far away as Whangarei. It was a success and everyone enjoyed themselves, and I'm hoping that this show will be at least as enjoyable as that one was."

There would be a variety of categories for rabbits, guinea pigs and rodents (mice, rats and chinchillas), including different breeds/varieties and fancy dress, along with classes for vegetable animals, pet rocks, pet-themed art and photography, which would be open to all, and a free colouring competition for kids.

"This will be a family-friendly event, and people will be welcome to come for a look," Rebekah added.

"At this stage we do not cater for cats or dogs, however, as it can be stressful on the smaller animals to be in close proximity to bigger pets."

The show will run from 10am to 1pm, with entries accepted at the hall from 9am to 9.30. Entry will cost $2 per pet category and $1 per non-pet category (to help cover costs).
