The first event of the burnout season at Kaikohe proved another massive success attracting a total of 30 entries, each competing three runs in the battle to claim the ultimate burnout artist with another 10 joining the fun as the adrenaline pumped, inspiring a number of spectators to enter into the spirit of things and put their cars on the pad.
With the usual number of cars overheating as they were pushed to the limits, the day's major casualties included Joel Young's Subaru Legacy catching fire in the engine bay to end his day's racing; Grant Smith ending up shooting a con-rod out the side of the engine of his Ford Falcon stationwagon (Falconstein); while Vance Tasker's Toyota Corolla DX finished looking the worse for wear after dropping its drive shaft on the burnout pad.
Someone couldn't resist noting Tasker's car hadn't gone into the event in the best nick, having caught fire while he was doing burnouts in his garage at home earlier this year.
Organiser George Price described proceedings as "full-on" thanks to a good variety of makes and models entered to skid and burn out before another large, well lubricated and very enthusiastic crowd.
The overall winners were, Carl Adams 1, Brenda Marshall 2, Vance Tasker 3, with Joe Sullivan and Grant Smith sharing fourth-equal.
