Nothing's changed
I visited six primary schools around Kaitaia last week to drop off a history book.
I was once a regular itinerant visitor to these schools, 1961 through 1964. These schools back then were staffed mainly with dedicated capable teachers and the students were in general friendly, happy young people, all gaining from the interactions of children, staff and other adults, eg gaining a good basic education.
Last week I gained the impression that my former impressions were still valid. The warmth, friendliness and the displayed work of children around the office was lovely to see. No doubt the generations and changes have had an effect, but my general impression was positive. The few children I encountered (classes were working) were warm, friendly and polite, directing me to the office.
I just want to say, communities, keep backing your schools and teachers, and teachers, keep up the grand work you are doing. Your extra workload does not appear to have reduced your effectiveness. You all need be proud of the youth you are helping towards adulthood.
