Cherry picking
Air New Zealand could be renamed "Air on cherry-picked high profit routes only". While a taxpayer stake remains in the 'national carrier' there should be a social dividend of some kind for the Far North which puts up with the terrible twins crappy roads and no rail.
Tourism and some inclusion in the modern world for personal travel, business and education are reasons for retaining air travel at Kaitaia. If Northland MPs are ever going to start pushing the interests of the North in Wellington rather than vice versa now is the time.
